Alex McDonnell is a master practitioner in Lean operational excellence and organisational design, and a management consultant who works inside organisations, not just advising them, until the new way of working is running. He is also an author, speaker and educator, and developer of Structured Collaboration: a practical way to get people in complex organisations working together by design rather than by default. He also developed the Agile Business Execution Canvas® and introduced Concurrent Management in Who Designed Your Organisation?
He has held senior executive roles at Ericsson, where he helped set up its original software development centre, and at Dell and Eircom. He has also founded, scaled and successfully exited several businesses, beginning with Technodisc in 1984, and in 2003 co-founded Expertivity Technologies with Paula Lawton.
He has led improvement programmes at more than seventy organisations across technology, healthcare, government and financial services, typically delivering 30–40% improvements in operational performance.
Alex has taught as a guest lecturer at Syracuse University, the University of Limerick, DCU, TU Dublin and DIT, and has trained and mentored leadership teams in operational excellence for more than twenty years.
He holds an MSc in Strategic Quality Management and an MBA from the University of Limerick, and a BA in Management from the Irish Management Institute. His MSc, focused on Lean and Six Sigma, also earned him certification as a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt. He completed MIT Sloan’s executive programme in Business Dynamics, led by John Sterman, and MIT later featured his reflections on the programme in its own promotional material. He also served as a non-executive director of Ask Jeeves Europe.
